Northeast India

Assam and Kaziranga

Rhino grasslands, river light and the living culture of the Brahmaputra valley.

Assam pairs one of India's most celebrated wildlife landscapes with a gentle, culture-rich river valley. It is an easy region to enter, and a rewarding one to take slowly.

Overview

Why Assam and Kaziranga

Assam is built around the Brahmaputra, a wide, braided river that shapes the farming, the festivals, the food and the light. Guwahati, the gateway, sits on its banks beneath the Nilachal Hill, where the Kamakhya temple draws pilgrims from across the country. Further east the valley opens into floodplain grassland, tea country and the river island of Majuli.

Kaziranga National Park is the region's best-known destination. Its tall grasslands, wetlands and forest edges are home to the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, elephants and a long list of resident and migratory birds. Visits are structured around safari slots in different park ranges, and they depend on the park's seasonal opening and current conditions.

What makes Assam work for a considered journey is its pace. Distances are manageable, roads are generally easy by Himalayan standards, and the cultural layer is real: Vaishnavite satras on Majuli, Ahom-era monuments around Sivasagar, weaving traditions at Sualkuchi and a distinct cuisine that is lighter and more varied than visitors expect.

Best suited to: Wildlife lovers, first-time Northeast visitors, culture-minded couples and families who prefer easy road distances; pairs naturally with Meghalaya.

Best time to visit

Seasons in Assam and Kaziranga

Nov-Feb (cool season)

Pleasant days, cool mornings and the main Kaziranga season. Morning fog can reduce early-safari visibility, and December and January are the busiest months.

Mar-Apr (spring)

Warmer and increasingly humid. Grass is shorter after seasonal management, which many visitors find helpful for wildlife viewing. The park generally operates until the monsoon.

May-Sep (monsoon)

Heavy rain and river flooding. Kaziranga is typically closed to tourists for part of this period, and animals move to higher ground. Not recommended for wildlife itineraries.

Oct (transition)

Opening dates for the park vary by year and by range, so confirm current dates before fixing travel.

How many days?

Recommended duration

For Guwahati and Kaziranga alone, three nights is the practical minimum. It allows a day for Guwahati sights, a drive to the park, and enough time for at least two safari slots. Four nights lets you add a second range, a village or tea visit and some downtime.

Five to six nights lets you add Majuli or Sivasagar, and seven to eight nights lets you combine Assam with Meghalaya without rushing. The drive from Guwahati to Kaziranga takes roughly five hours, so we avoid scheduling it on the same day as an early flight.

Travel tips

Practical guidance

Reviewed 23 October 2026. Rules, permits and road conditions change; we confirm current requirements when planning your trip.

Transport and accessibility

Guwahati (GAU) is the main gateway, with good rail and road links. Kaziranga is roughly 4.5 to 5.5 hours from Guwahati by road. Jorhat has an airport for travellers continuing to Majuli or upper Assam.

Weather and clothing

Winters are mild by day and cool in the early morning, especially on open-jeep safaris. Carry a warm layer, a scarf and muted clothing. Summers are hot and humid; the monsoon is wet.

Permits and entry

Indian nationals do not need a permit for Assam. Foreign nationals need a valid Indian visa. Park entry and safari fees are paid separately and change from time to time, so we confirm them at the time of booking.

Road conditions

Highways are generally good, but slow-moving trucks, town traffic and roadworks can lengthen journeys. Allow buffer time before flights.

Family travel

Kaziranga suits families with children who can sit through safaris of around two hours. Safari timings begin early, so plan for early nights.

Local customs

Dress modestly at temples and satras, remove footwear when asked, and ask before photographing people or religious ceremonies.

Responsible travel

Keep noise low on safari, follow your naturalist's guidance, avoid feeding wildlife and choose accommodation that treats waste and water responsibly.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Kaziranga open all year?

No. The park typically closes for the monsoon, roughly from May to October, and reopens for the cooler season. Exact dates are announced by the park authority each year, so we confirm before finalising dates.

How many safaris should we plan?

Two to three slots across at least two ranges gives a balanced experience. Sightings are never guaranteed, and a third slot often helps.

Can we see rhinos for certain?

Rhino sightings are common in good conditions, but wildlife is unpredictable. We plan enough time rather than promise sightings.

Are elephant safaris available?

Safari modes and availability are set by the park authority and can change. We check current arrangements at the time of booking rather than assume them.

Is an evening Brahmaputra cruise always possible?

No. Cruises depend on operator schedules, water levels and weather. We confirm the option for your dates.

Can Assam be combined with Meghalaya?

Yes. Guwahati is the natural bridge between the two. See our combined Assam and Meghalaya journey.

Is Assam suitable for children?

Generally yes. Distances are manageable and safaris are an easy introduction to wildlife. Early morning starts are the main consideration.
