Assam and Meghalaya Combined Journey: 7 Nights / 8 Days

Kaziranga's grasslands, then the hills, waterfalls and living landscapes of Meghalaya, with Guwahati as a bridge.

Overview

This combined route starts in the floodplain and finishes in the hills. It allows two full days at Kaziranga, then a long transfer to Shillong, followed by Sohra, Dawki and Mawlynnong on a loop back toward Guwahati.

The Kaziranga to Shillong transfer is a long day. We offer a Guwahati overnight as an alternative for guests who prefer to split it.

Day 1Arrive in Guwahati

Transfer to your hotel and rest. If arrival time permits, take a short river outing on the Brahmaputra, subject to operator schedules and water levels.

Day 2Drive to Kaziranga

Drive to Kaziranga, roughly 5 hours. Settle into your lodge and join an afternoon safari if park timings allow.

Day 3A full day of safaris

Spend the day on safari across two ranges, depending on current park arrangements. Rest between slots.

Day 4Kaziranga to Shillong

After breakfast, drive to Shillong, roughly 6 to 7 hours depending on traffic and stops. This is a long transfer, so we build in meal and comfort breaks.

Day 5Shillong and the surrounding hills

Explore Shillong at an easy pace: Elephant Falls, Don Bosco Museum, Ward's Lake and a local market. Continue to Sohra in the afternoon if time allows.

Day 6Sohra, Dawki and Mawlynnong

Spend the morning at Sohra (Cherrapunji) for waterfalls and viewpoints. Continue to Dawki for the Umngot River and Mawlynnong village, with time for short walks. Return to Shillong in the evening.

Day 7Return to Guwahati

Drive back to Guwahati, roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. In the afternoon, visit Kamakhya Temple, allowing for queues.

Day 8Departure

Transfer to the airport or station for onward travel.

Main experiences

  • Kaziranga safaris across two ranges
  • Shillong's museum, falls and market
  • Sohra waterfalls and viewpoints
  • Dawki river and Mawlynnong village walks
  • Kamakhya Temple
  • Meghalaya's cooler hill landscapes

Practical considerations

Season

November to March works best for both regions. Kaziranga is closed in the monsoon.

Transfers

The Kaziranga to Shillong transfer is long. A Guwahati overnight breaks it up at the cost of an extra night.

Dawki

River activities depend on conditions and local arrangements.
