Kalimpong and North Bengal: Travel Guide and Itineraries

Quiet ridges, orchid nurseries and forest villages.

Kalimpong is a gentler hill town with monasteries, old mission schools and flower nurseries. Beyond it lie forest villages and the Dooars, ideal for travellers who prefer quiet places over crowds.

Overview

Why Kalimpong and Offbeat North Bengal

Kalimpong lies at around 1,250 metres, a short distance from the Teesta River, with a calmer rhythm than Darjeeling. It has long been a meeting place of Himalayan cultures, and its monasteries, churches, old homes and plant nurseries reward unhurried exploration.

From Kalimpong, narrow forest roads lead to small settlements such as Lava, Kolakham, Rishop and Lolegaon, where days revolve around walks, birdsong and mountain views rather than sightseeing. These villages have simple facilities, so we match stays and routes carefully to each guest.

Offbeat North Bengal also includes the Dooars, the forested plains at the foot of the Himalayas, with rivers, tea gardens and wildlife areas. It makes a good contrast to the hills for anyone wanting variety.

Best suited to: Travellers who like quiet walks, birding, gardens and village atmosphere, and who are comfortable with simpler facilities in more remote spots.

Best time to visit

Seasons in Kalimpong and Offbeat North Bengal

March to May (spring)

Pleasant weather, blooming nurseries and good visibility. A popular time for village stays.

June to September (monsoon)

Heavy rain and landslide risk, especially on narrow forest roads. Dooars parks usually close or restrict access during this time.

October to early December (autumn)

Clear skies, comfortable temperatures and good mountain views. Our most recommended window for hill villages and Dooars safaris.

Late December to February (winter)

Cold in the hills, mild in the Dooars. Mornings can be very clear, but fog sometimes affects the plains.

How many days?

Recommended duration

Three nights is enough for Kalimpong town and a day trip to Lava and Kolakham. Four nights allows a stay in a forest village for a more restful feel.

For a combined hills-and-Dooars trip, five or six nights is more comfortable, since the road from the Dooars to the hills is long and winding. We recommend a slower pace and confirm each leg before you commit.

Travel tips

Practical guidance

Reviewed 23 October 2026. Rules, permits and road conditions change; we confirm current requirements when planning your trip.

Transport and accessibility

Kalimpong is roughly 3 hours from Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri, depending on traffic. Village roads are narrow, and we arrange local vehicles suited to them.

Weather and clothing

Pack layers, a rain jacket and good walking shoes. Forest villages can be cool and damp even in spring.

Permits and entry

Indian nationals usually need no permit for Kalimpong, Lava and Kolakham, but forest areas such as Neora Valley may need entry permissions. Foreign nationals should check requirements for protected areas.

Road conditions

Narrow roads and landslides are common in the rains. We recommend flexibility and, in remote areas, travelling in daylight.

Altitude and acclimatisation

Altitudes range from about 1,250 m to 2,200 m, so acclimatisation is rarely an issue for healthy travellers.

Family travel

Village stays are simple. We suggest Kalimpong town for families with younger children, and Lava or Kolakham for older children who enjoy walks.

Local customs

Dress modestly at monasteries and churches, and ask before photographing people.

Responsible travel

Avoid single-use plastic, stay on trails in forest areas and buy plants only from licensed nurseries.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Kalimpong better than Darjeeling?

They are different. Kalimpong is calmer, with more space and fewer crowds. Darjeeling has more heritage and tea-estate options. Many travellers combine both.

How far is Lava from Kalimpong?

Roughly 30 to 35 km, which takes around 1.5 hours depending on the road. A day trip is possible, though an overnight stay is more relaxed.

Do we need a permit for Lava, Kolakham or Neora Valley?

Lava and Kolakham are generally open, but protected forest areas such as Neora Valley may need permission. We confirm current rules before booking.

Can we combine Kalimpong with the Dooars?

Yes, though the road from the Dooars to the hills is long. We suggest at least five nights so the journey is not rushed.

Are the Dooars worth visiting?

They offer a different experience, with forests, rivers and a chance to see rhinos and elephants. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

What kind of stays are available in remote villages?

Mostly homestays and small lodges with simple but comfortable facilities. We choose carefully and confirm what is available for your dates.

When is the best time to visit offbeat North Bengal?

October to early December and March to May are usually the most comfortable. The Dooars parks generally close in the monsoon.
