Assam Travel Planning
Assam is easy to visit but varied. A little planning around regions, seasons and routes helps you build a trip that feels unhurried.
Getting there and around
Guwahati (GAU) is the main gateway, with good flight, rail and road connections. Jorhat has an airport for upper Assam and Majuli. Most journeys use private road transfers, as distances are manageable but public transport is slow.
Regions at a glance
- Lower Assam: Guwahati, Kamakhya, Sualkuchi and Hajo. Good for temples, weaving and river views.
- Central Assam: Kaziranga and the Karbi Anglong foothills. The heart of the wildlife season.
- Upper Assam: Jorhat, Majuli and Sivasagar. Culture, tea and Ahom heritage.
Seasons
November to March is the most comfortable time for most itineraries. Kaziranga is typically closed in the monsoon, and summer can be hot and humid. See the best time to visit Kaziranga.
Festivals
Assam's Bihu festivals mark the agricultural year. Rongali Bihu in mid-April is the most widely celebrated. Dates for other festivals follow regional calendars, so check each year if you wish to plan around them.
Permits and entry
Indian nationals do not need permits for Assam. Foreign nationals need a valid Indian visa. Park entry and activity fees are paid separately, and we confirm them at booking.
Food and culture
Assamese food is often lighter than visitors expect, with fish, greens, rice and the local tea. If you eat vegetarian, let us know in advance.
How long to plan
- 3 nights: Guwahati and Kaziranga.
- 5 nights: Add Majuli or Sivasagar.
- 7 to 8 nights: Combine with Meghalaya.
