Beyond the Eastern Himalayas

Kashmir

Houseboats, alpine meadows and Mughal gardens in the Kashmir Valley.

Kashmir combines the stillness of Dal Lake with river valleys, pine forests and meadows in the Pir Panjal and Himalayan ranges. It rewards slow travel, and its character changes with each season.

Overview

Why Kashmir

The Kashmir Valley lies between the Pir Panjal and the main Himalaya. Srinagar, the summer capital, sits on Dal Lake, with houseboats, Shikara boats, old wooden architecture and terraced Mughal gardens. Around it, Pahalgam offers river valleys and pine forests, Gulmarg wide meadows and a high-altitude gondola, and Sonamarg a broad meadow beside the Sindh valley.

We plan Kashmir at an easy pace, with a mix of houseboat and hotel stays and sightseeing that allows for weather and local rules. Local taxi unions operate in several resort areas, so some excursions are priced separately and booked on the ground.

Conditions can change, including road access and security restrictions. We advise checking current travel advisories before you travel and keeping flexibility in your plans.

Best suited to: Families, couples and groups who enjoy scenery, gardens and an easy introduction to the Himalayan valleys.

Best time to visit

Seasons in Kashmir

March to April (spring)

Blossom and fresh green, with cool days and chilly nights. A tulip garden in Srinagar typically opens in spring; dates vary by year.

May to June (early summer)

Pleasant days and green meadows. This is busy, so book early.

July to August (summer and monsoon)

Green and lush, but traffic and restrictions can rise around pilgrimage periods and holidays. Check current conditions.

September to November (autumn)

Clear skies and, around October and November, golden chinar leaves.

December to February (winter)

Cold, with snow at Gulmarg. Some roads can close; plan for delays.

How many days?

Recommended duration

Allow at least five nights for a first visit, six or seven if you wish to include Sonamarg and slower days. Road distances are short but slow, and local sightseeing often needs additional taxis.

If you are travelling in peak summer or on a public holiday, add a buffer day for traffic and service delays.
