Assam and Meghalaya Combined Itinerary

Assam's river valley and Meghalaya's cool hills sit side by side, with Guwahati as the bridge. Combining them works well if you plan transfers carefully.

Why combine them

Assam offers wildlife, culture and an easy pace. Meghalaya adds waterfalls, caves, living root bridges and cooler air. Together they make a varied week from one arrival and departure point.

Suggested structure

A comfortable combined trip is around seven to eight nights:

  • 2 to 3 nights in Assam: Guwahati and Kaziranga.
  • 4 to 5 nights in Meghalaya: Shillong, Sohra and the Dawki and Mawlynnong area.
  • 1 night in Guwahati: Before departure, if desired.

Which order?

Going to Kaziranga first and then Meghalaya works well because the park is a destination for early starts and fresh energy. The Kaziranga to Shillong transfer is long, roughly six to seven hours, so we sometimes split it with a Guwahati night. See our Assam and Meghalaya combined journey.

Driving times to expect

  • Guwahati to Kaziranga: around 4.5 to 5.5 hours.
  • Guwahati to Shillong: around 3 to 3.5 hours.
  • Shillong to Sohra: around 2 hours.

Times vary with traffic, roadworks and weather.

Seasons that suit both

November to March is the most comfortable period. Kaziranga is typically closed in the monsoon, while Meghalaya is extremely wet from June to September. See best time to visit Meghalaya for more detail.

What to add or drop

  • Add Majuli if you want culture and slower travel.
  • Drop Dawki or Mawlynnong if you prefer fewer long drives.
  • Add a living root bridge walk, with our root bridge guide.
