Some of the most memorable travel in the Himalayas happens between destinations: high passes, river valleys, forested ridgelines and long views. Scenic road journeys are planned so the drive is part of the story, not a long gap between stops.
This theme includes Ladakh, Spiti, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and the hills of Meghalaya.
We estimate drive times conservatively, because mountain roads are slow and subject to closures. We add viewpoint, lunch and rest stops, and keep the number of hotel changes sensible.
Season matters greatly. We only suggest routes that are realistically open on your dates.

Ladakh · 6 Nights / 7 Days
Leh, the Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso, with acclimatisation first and monasteries at both ends.
Suits: Active travellers in good health who want Ladakh's best-known landscapes at a considered pace.
Spiti Valley · 7 Nights / 8 Days
The classic circuit up through Kinnaur for gradual acclimatisation and out over Kunzum La to Manali.
Suits: Travellers who enjoy long road journeys, village stays and gradual acclimatisation.
Arunachal Pradesh · 7 Nights / 8 Days
A well-paced Tawang circuit with three nights in the mountains, time to acclimatise and a return via Bomdila.
Suits: Travellers who want a proper Tawang trip with time to acclimatise, and who enjoy scenic drives and monastic culture.
Sikkim · 8 Nights / 9 Days
Gangtok, North Sikkim's Lachen and Lachung, then South Sikkim, with enough time to acclimatise to high altitude.
Suits: Travellers who are healthy, comfortable with long winding drives and keen on high-altitude scenery. Not suitable for small children or those with certain health conditions.
Meghalaya · 6 Nights / 7 Days
A walking-led journey with the Nongriat root bridges, Sohra's waterfalls, the Umngot river and Mawphlang's sacred forest.
Suits: Active couples, friends and families with older children who enjoy walking and nature.
Practical considerations
High passes in Ladakh and Spiti open and close with weather. Plan only within accessible seasons.
Expect landslides, roadworks and sections of rough surface, especially in and after the monsoon.
Acclimatise gradually on routes crossing high passes. Take medical advice if unsure.
Winding roads can cause nausea. Plan seating and stops.
Keep a spare day where possible. Delays are common and cannot be predicted.
Questions
We generally arrange a private vehicle with an experienced local driver, since road knowledge and conditions matter. Self-drive is a different kind of trip and we advise on feasibility case by case.
Often four to eight hours of travel time on mountain stretches, though distances can look short on a map.
It depends on the route. Ladakh and Spiti are mostly summer routes, while the Eastern Himalayas can be travelled in several seasons.
We plan alternatives where practical and keep you informed. Closures sometimes require an itinerary change.
