Heritage Walks

Slow walks through neighbourhoods where history is still visible.

A heritage walk is a way to read a place at street level: old buildings, churches, temples, markets and the stories attached to them. We offer walks in two very different cities, the hill town of Darjeeling and the old quarters of Kolkata.

They work as stand-alone experiences or as a start or end to a longer Eastern Himalayan journey.

How we plan it

We design walks of two to four hours around the interests of the group, with stops for tea and food. Some interiors need advance permission or have limited opening days, so we confirm access before the day.

Choose your city below, or combine both: Kolkata is a common gateway for travellers heading to Darjeeling.

Sample outline

What it can include

Darjeeling hill-town walk

A walk around Chowrasta, Observatory Hill, the older streets and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway station. See Darjeeling Heritage Walks.

Kolkata old-city walk

A walk through North Kolkata, College Street and the Dalhousie area, exploring architecture and everyday life. See Kolkata Heritage Walks.

Combined add-on

A short Kolkata walk before or after a Darjeeling journey, for travellers arriving or departing through the city.

Access, opening days and permissions vary and are confirmed when your journey is planned.

Practical considerations

Good to know

Walking

Expect gentle but steady walking. Darjeeling has steep gradients and steps. Kolkata has uneven pavements and traffic.

Timing

Early mornings are cooler and quieter in both cities.

Access

Some buildings are private or permission-based. Access can change at short notice.

Clothing

Comfortable shoes are essential. Carry a rain layer in the monsoon.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long are the walks?

Usually two to four hours, depending on your pace and interests.

Do I need to be fit?

Moderate fitness is enough for Kolkata. In Darjeeling the slopes and altitude mean the walk may feel harder than the distance suggests.

Are the walks private?

They are planned for your group. We do not run fixed public departures.

Can children join?

Yes, usually from about primary-school age, if they enjoy walking and stories.

Can I add a walk to an existing itinerary?

Often yes. Tell us your dates and we will check a suitable time.
