What to expect

Evening outings on the Brahmaputra generally run for an hour or two from ghats along the Guwahati riverfront. Some boats offer simple seating, others a more comfortable experience with refreshments. You may see Umananda Island, the bridges and the city skyline, and, with luck, river birds. Sightings of Gangetic river dolphins are possible but not guaranteed.

• Water levels: High water in the monsoon and low water in the dry season can both affect boarding points and routes.
• Weather: Rain, strong winds or poor visibility can lead to cancellations.

Timing the sunset

Assam is far to the east, so sunset comes early, especially in winter, when it can be around 4:30 pm. Plan to arrive well before departure, and do not assume you can fit a cruise after a long afternoon drive.

Fitting it into your journey

The best slot is usually the first evening in Guwahati, if you arrive early enough, or the last evening before departure. A cruise pairs well with a visit to Kamakhya Temple.
