Eastern Himalayas

Sikkim: Travel Guide and Tour Itineraries

Monasteries, mountain valleys and the shadow of Kanchenjunga

A small Himalayan state where prayer flags line the ridges and the road climbs from warm river valleys to cold alpine lakes. Sikkim rewards a considered route and an unhurried pace.

Overview

Why Sikkim

Sikkim packs a great deal of variety into a small area. In a single trip you can pass from subtropical river valleys to cardamom hills, rhododendron forest and bare, wind-scoured plateaus above 4,000 metres. Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, dominates the western skyline on clear days, and the Buddhist culture of the Bhutia, Lepcha and Nepali communities is visible everywhere, from the prayer flags on bridges to the monasteries on forested ridges.

The state is usually divided into four districts for planning. East Sikkim holds Gangtok, the capital, along with Rumtek Monastery and the high road to Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La. South Sikkim offers Ravangla, Namchi and Temi, with tea terraces and gentler hills. West Sikkim centres on Pelling, Pemayangtse Monastery and the old capital site at Rabdentse. North Sikkim is the high, remote region around Lachen and Lachung, reached by long, slow roads and requiring permits and careful acclimatisation.

Distances look short on a map but Sikkim's roads are narrow, winding and sometimes interrupted by landslides, especially in the monsoon. A good itinerary therefore covers fewer places, with enough time in each. We design routes around road conditions, altitude gain, permits and the interests of the people travelling, rather than trying to include every well-known name.

Best suited to: Travellers who enjoy mountain scenery, monasteries and varied landscapes, and who are comfortable with winding mountain roads.

  • Kanchenjunga viewpointsPelling and the nearby ridges offer some of the clearest views of the range in the early morning, weather permitting.

North Sikkim

  • Lachen and LachungMountain villages at roughly 2,700 metres, used as bases for the high valleys. Permits and a minimum stay apply.
  • Yumthang ValleyA high valley of rhododendron forest and meadows, at its most colourful in spring.
  • Gurudongmar LakeOne of the highest lakes in the country at above 5,000 metres, reached on a very early start from Lachen. Not suitable for everyone; acclimatisation is essential.

Best time to visit

Seasons in Sikkim

March to May (spring)

Rhododendrons and other flowers bloom, especially in North Sikkim and on higher ridges (typically April and May). Days are generally pleasant, though afternoon cloud is common.

June to September (monsoon)

Heavy rain brings landslides and road closures, particularly in the north. Valleys are lush, but travel plans need flexibility.

October to November (autumn)

Often considered a settled period with clearer skies and good mountain views. Higher areas become cold at night.

December to February (winter)

Cold at altitude and snow is likely above about 3,000 metres. Gangtok, Ravangla and Pelling remain comfortable with warm clothing; some high areas may be inaccessible.

How many days?

Recommended duration

Five days is enough for Gangtok and a few East Sikkim highlights. Seven days allows Gangtok, Ravangla or Temi, and Pelling at a comfortable pace, with time to enjoy the places you stay in. If you would like to include North Sikkim, plan at least eight to nine days so the altitude gain is gradual and there is a buffer for weather and landslide delays.

Resist the urge to add more. Journey times in Sikkim are often longer than the distance suggests, and one extra night in a good location usually adds more to a trip than one more stop. See our guide to how many days to plan for Sikkim.

Travel tips

Practical guidance

Reviewed 23 October 2026. Rules, permits and road conditions change; we confirm current requirements when planning your trip.

Transport and accessibility

Most journeys start at Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station near Siliguri. Gangtok is roughly four to five hours by road. Shared journeys on mountain roads are slow, so private cars with experienced local drivers are usual for sightseeing.

Weather and clothing

Dress in layers. Even in warm months, higher areas can be cold, windy and wet. Carry a rain jacket, warm layers, sun protection and sturdy shoes.

Permits and entry

Indian citizens do not need a permit to enter Sikkim but need a Protected Area Permit for Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and North Sikkim, usually arranged through a registered agent. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit for the state and agent-arranged permits for restricted areas. Rules change, so please check current requirements (see Sikkim travel permits).

Altitude and acclimatisation

Gangtok is at roughly 1,650 metres. Tsomgo Lake and Yumthang are much higher, and Gurudongmar is above 5,000 metres. Ascend gradually, drink water, avoid alcohol on arrival and tell your driver or guide if you feel unwell.

Road conditions

Mountain roads are narrow and can be affected by landslides, especially from June to September. Build buffer time into onward travel and avoid tight flight or train connections on the same day.

Family travel

Gangtok, Ravangla and Pelling suit most families. For young children or older travellers, we recommend skipping very high areas or splitting long drives. See Sikkim family holidays.

Local customs

Remove shoes before entering monastery halls, ask before photographing monks or interiors, and walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels.

Responsible travel

Carry reusable bottles and avoid single-use plastics. Stay on marked paths in forest and lake areas, and do not leave waste at high-altitude sites.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need for Sikkim?

Five days covers Gangtok and East Sikkim. Seven days adds either Pelling or Ravangla. For North Sikkim, plan eight to nine days so you can acclimatise and allow for delays.

Do I need a permit for Sikkim?

Indian citizens do not need a permit to enter the state, but do need a Protected Area Permit for places such as Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and North Sikkim. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit. Rules can change, so we confirm current requirements for your dates.

Is North Sikkim suitable for children and older travellers?

It can be demanding because of the altitude and long drives. Lachung and Yumthang are lower than Gurudongmar and may be more comfortable. We discuss health, age and comfort before suggesting a route.

When can I see Kanchenjunga?

Clear views are most likely in the early morning, particularly in October and November and in spring, but weather varies and no sighting can be guaranteed.

Can Sikkim be combined with Darjeeling?

Yes. Darjeeling and Sikkim are commonly combined, with Darjeeling first and then a road transfer to Gangtok or Pelling. Budget a full day for the transfer.

Are roads safe in the monsoon?

Landslides are common from June to September, especially in North Sikkim. If you travel then, we recommend flexible dates, lower-altitude routes and extra buffer time.

Is Sikkim accessible by air?

Pakyong Airport near Gangtok handles limited flights. Many travellers still use Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station and continue by road. Check current flight availability.
