Beyond the Eastern Himalayas

Andaman Islands

Quiet beaches, clear water and a slower island rhythm.

The Andaman Islands combine beaches, coral reef and a layered colonial and freedom-movement history. We shape island itineraries around ferry schedules, tides and the pace you actually want.

Overview

Why Andaman Islands

The Andaman Islands sit in the Bay of Bengal, closer to Myanmar and Thailand than to the Indian mainland. For most travellers the journey is built around three places: Port Blair, the capital and gateway; Havelock (officially Swaraj Dweep), known for Radhanagar and Elephant Beach; and Neil (Shaheed Dweep), smaller, flatter and quieter.

The landscape is tropical forest meeting white sand and coral. Beyond the beaches there is history to engage with: the Cellular Jail in Port Blair is a significant memorial to India's freedom struggle, and the ruins on Ross Island show how the British administered the settlement.

Island travel is governed by sea and weather. Ferries run to schedules that can change at short notice, snorkelling and diving depend on visibility and conditions, and some sites have timings or closures that vary. A good Andaman itinerary leaves room for that, rather than packing every day.

Best suited to: Couples, families and relaxed beach-and-reef travellers who are happy to let the weather and ferries set the rhythm.

Experiences and attractions

What to see and do

Port Blair and nearby

  • Cellular Jail National MemorialA former colonial prison and now a memorial. The evening light and sound show tells its story, subject to the current schedule and language slots.
  • Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep)A short boat ride from Port Blair to the ruins of a former British administrative base, now reclaimed by banyan roots. Timings and access rules vary, so these are confirmed before travel.
  • Corbyn's Cove and Chidiya TapuA calm town beach near Port Blair, and a quiet southern tip known for birdlife and sunsets.

Havelock (Swaraj Dweep)

  • Radhanagar BeachA broad sandy beach with gentle forested edges, popular for late-afternoon light and sunsets.
  • Elephant BeachA boat or forest-trail access point for snorkelling and other water activities, subject to tides, visibility and operator availability.
  • Kalapathar and quieter beachesSmaller stretches away from the main crowds, good for unhurried time by the sea.

Neil (Shaheed Dweep)

  • Bharatpur BeachShallow, sheltered water close to the jetty, used for swimming and glass-bottom boat trips when conditions allow.
  • Laxmanpur BeachA west-facing beach known for sunsets and a low-key evening atmosphere.
  • Natural Rock BridgeA rock formation accessible at suitable tide levels, so timing is planned around the tide table.

Optional extras

  • Baratang limestone cavesA long day trip from Port Blair by road and boat through mangrove creeks. The road passes through a tribal reserve with strict conduct rules, including no photography and no stopping.
  • Scuba and snorkellingIntroductory dives and guided snorkelling are available on Havelock and Neil, subject to weather, safety conditions and certified operators.

Best time to visit

Seasons in Andaman Islands

October to May (dry season)

Generally the more settled period, with calmer seas and better water clarity. December to February is the busiest and most expensive window; November and March to April are often a good balance.

May to September (south-west monsoon)

Heavy rain, rougher seas and a higher chance of ferry and activity cancellations. Some travellers choose it for fewer crowds, but flexibility is essential.

October to December (cyclone watch)

The Bay of Bengal can produce storms in this window. Keep dates flexible and check forecasts before committing.

How many days?

Recommended duration

For a first visit, five to seven nights usually works well: one or two nights in Port Blair, two or three on Havelock and, if you want a quieter contrast, one or two on Neil. Fewer than four nights tends to feel rushed once ferry time is counted.

Add a buffer day if you have an onward flight booked, as sea transfers can shift. Our Andaman at a relaxed pace itinerary builds this in.

Travel tips

Practical guidance

Reviewed 23 October 2026. Rules, permits and road conditions change; we confirm current requirements when planning your trip.

Transport and accessibility

Port Blair (IXZ) is reached by air from several mainland cities. Between islands you travel by ferry; book in advance for the season and expect schedules to change with sea conditions.

Weather and clothing

Light cottons, swimwear, a rain jacket and reef-safe sun protection. It is humid year-round.

Permits and entry

Indian nationals do not need a permit but should carry photo ID. Rules for foreign nationals and for specific islands have changed over the years, so we confirm current requirements at the time of booking.

Road conditions

Island roads are generally short but narrow and winding. Distances are small, yet transfers take longer than the map suggests.

Family travel

Gentle beaches such as Bharatpur on Neil and Radhanagar suit families. Check current rules on age limits for ferries and activities.

Local customs

Dress respectfully away from beaches. Photography and conduct rules in tribal reserve areas are strict and legally enforced.

Responsible travel

Do not touch or stand on coral, avoid single-use plastic and never buy shells or coral souvenirs. Read our guide to responsible marine tourism.

Five to seven nights suits most first visits. See our guide on how many days to spend.

When is the best time to visit?

Yes, with sensible planning. Choose calm beaches and avoid tight ferry connections. See our family holiday guide.

Do I need to know how to swim for water activities?
