Eastern Himalayas

Darjeeling: Travel Guide and Tour Itineraries

Tea country, living heritage and the Kanchenjunga horizon.

Darjeeling is a Himalayan hill town of steep lanes, colonial-era buildings, working tea estates and Buddhist monasteries. Its charm lies in pace, texture and detail, and in a clear morning view of the high mountains.

Overview

Why Darjeeling

Darjeeling sits at roughly 2,000 metres on a ridge in the Eastern Himalayas, within sight of Kanchenjunga on clear days. It grew as a hill station in the nineteenth century and is still defined by three things: tea, a mix of Nepali, Tibetan, Lepcha, Bhutia and Bengali cultures, and a railway that climbs the same slopes.

What sets the town apart is how much can be done on foot. A morning might include a slow walk through the Mall and Chowrasta, a visit to a monastery such as Bhutia Busty, and a cup of first-flush or second-flush tea at an estate. The weather shapes everything: mist can hide the mountains for days, then lift without warning. We plan with that in mind, leaving room for flexibility rather than stacking every hour.

Beyond the town, the surrounding hills hold tea gardens, pine and rhododendron forest, and quieter villages where a slower kind of stay is possible. Darjeeling suits travellers who enjoy atmosphere, history, food and walking more than a checklist of sights.

Best suited to: Couples, families with older children, photographers, tea lovers and anyone who enjoys heritage, walking and slow mornings in the mountains.

Experiences and attractions

What to see and do

Heritage and town life

  • Chowrasta and the MallThe town's open promenade and meeting place. Best explored slowly, with a stop for tea and a look at the surrounding lanes and bookshops.
  • Observatory Hill and Mahakal TempleA short climb above the Mall, shared by Hindu and Buddhist worshippers. Prayer flags and a quiet atmosphere before the day gets busy.
  • Bhutia Busty MonasteryA Tibetan Buddhist monastery a short walk below the Mall, with a calm courtyard and views down the valley.
  • Darjeeling Himalayan RailwayThe narrow-gauge heritage line between Darjeeling and Ghoom. A short ride is a pleasant look at the town's history, subject to current services.

Viewpoints and mountain sights

  • Tiger HillA sunrise viewpoint roughly 11 km from town, reached on a pre-dawn drive. Views of Kanchenjunga depend entirely on the weather, so treat it as a possibility rather than a promise.
  • Batasia Loop and War MemorialA spiral section of the railway with a small garden and a memorial, near Ghoom. Good for a mid-morning stop.
  • Ghoom Monastery (Yiga Choeling)One of the older Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the area, at one of the highest points on the railway route.
  • Peace Pagoda and Japanese TempleA calm hillside complex above town, good in the late afternoon.

Tea country

  • Happy Valley Tea EstateOne of the estates closest to town, usually visited on foot or a short drive. Factory visits depend on the season and estate policy.
  • Tea estates beyond townSeveral estates around Darjeeling and Kurseong welcome visitors for tastings or walks. Opening arrangements vary, so we confirm in advance.

Nature and learning

  • Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and Zoological ParkA museum tracing Himalayan climbing history, beside a zoo known for its high-altitude species. Opening days vary, so we confirm them before you go.
  • Rock Garden and Ganga Maya ParkA landscaped waterfall garden roughly 10 km from town, often combined with a scenic drive.

Best time to visit

Seasons in Darjeeling

March to May (spring)

Mild days, rhododendrons and a good chance of clear mountain views, especially in April and early May. First-flush tea is harvested in this period. Busy around late April to May.

June to September (monsoon)

Heavy rain, mist and landslide risk on some roads. The hills are lush and visitors are fewer, but mountain views are rare and travel plans need flexibility.

October to early December (autumn)

Often the clearest season, with crisp air and good visibility. Many travellers choose October and November, so book stays early.

Late December to February (winter)

Cold, with frost possible, and sometimes light snow at higher points. Mornings can be very clear, but pack warm layers.

How many days?

Recommended duration

Three nights is a sensible minimum for a first visit, allowing a Tiger Hill morning, Ghoom and Batasia Loop, a tea estate and time in town. Four nights lets you slow down and add a heritage walk and a leisurely day.

Five or six nights suits travellers who want to combine Darjeeling with quieter hills nearby, such as the hills around Mirik or Kurseong. Travel times on mountain roads are longer than the distances suggest, so we plan around driving hours rather than kilometres.

Travel tips

Practical guidance

Reviewed 23 October 2026. Rules, permits and road conditions change; we confirm current requirements when planning your trip.

Transport and accessibility

Most journeys start from Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station near Siliguri. The drive to Darjeeling takes roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on route and traffic. Within town, many lanes are steep and best covered on foot or by short taxi rides.

Weather and clothing

Layers work best. Even in spring and autumn, mornings and evenings are cool, and winter is cold. Bring a light rain jacket year-round.

Road conditions

Heavy rain can cause landslides and delays, especially from June to September. We keep itineraries flexible and monitor conditions.

Altitude and acclimatisation

Darjeeling is at roughly 2,000 metres. Most travellers feel fine, but anyone with heart or respiratory conditions should take advice from a doctor before travelling.

Family travel

Steep lanes and early starts can tire young children. Tiger Hill is optional, and we can pace days with later starts and rest periods.

Local customs

Dress modestly at monasteries, remove shoes where asked, and ask before photographing people or ritual spaces.

Responsible travel

Carry a refillable bottle, avoid single-use plastic, and buy tea and crafts directly from local sellers where possible.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for Darjeeling?

Three nights covers the essentials. Four or five nights allows a more relaxed pace and time for tea estates, heritage walks or nearby quiet villages.

Will I see Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling?

Often in October to December and April to May, but visibility is never guaranteed. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons.

Is Tiger Hill worth the early start?

It can be memorable on a clear morning, but it depends on weather and crowds. We treat it as optional and flexible.

Can we visit a tea estate?

Yes. Visiting arrangements vary by estate and season, so we confirm access and timing before you travel.

Is Darjeeling suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes, with a gentler pace. Lanes can be steep, so we suggest comfortable stays, shorter walks and flexible days.

What is the toy train experience like?

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway runs short heritage rides, including steam services, subject to current operating schedules and availability.

How do we reach Darjeeling?

By road from Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station, which takes roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours. We arrange the transfer as part of your journey.
