Best Time to Visit Kaziranga
Kaziranga's visiting season is shaped by the monsoon. The park closes for part of the year, and the quality of your visit depends on when you go within the open window.
The short answer
Most visitors travel between November and April, when the park is open and the weather is comfortable. Opening dates are announced by the park authority each year, so always check before fixing your dates.
November to February
This is the main season. Days are pleasant, mornings are cool and migratory birds arrive in good numbers. Early mornings can be foggy, which sometimes affects visibility. December and January are the busiest months, so book accommodation and safaris early.
March to April
Conditions are warmer and more humid. Grassland is shorter in parts of the park after seasonal management, which many visitors find helpful for wildlife viewing. Mornings and late afternoons remain the best times for sightings.
May to October
The monsoon brings heavy rain and flooding. The park is typically closed to visitors for part of this period, and animals move to higher ground. We do not recommend this period for wildlife itineraries. Even when parts of the park reopen in October, conditions can be variable.
What about opening dates?
Exact opening dates vary by year and by range. Some ranges may reopen before others. We check current arrangements before confirming your trip, rather than assuming dates.
Choosing within the season
- For birdlife: November to February.
- For comfortable weather: November to early February.
- For fewer visitors: Early November or March to April.
- For photography: Mornings, with patience, in any month the park is open.
