Northeast India

Arunachal Pradesh

Monastery towns, high passes and valleys at the edge of the Eastern Himalayas.

Arunachal Pradesh is a land of long mountain roads, Monpa monasteries and distinct valley cultures. It rewards unhurried travel and careful planning.

Overview

Why Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh stretches along India's northeastern frontier, from the foothills near Bhalukpong to high Himalayan passes and river valleys that few visitors reach. The best-known route climbs from the Assam plains through Tenga, Bomdila and Dirang, crosses the Sela Pass and descends to Tawang, a monastery town at about 3,000 metres.

The state is culturally varied. In the west, Monpa communities follow Tibetan Buddhism and Tawang Monastery anchors the town. In central Arunachal, the Apatani plateau at Ziro is known for its rice-fish cultivation and traditions. Further east are forests, rivers and wildlife areas such as Namdapha, which require specialist logistics.

This is a destination where road time is the main design constraint. Journeys are long, weather can change plans and permits are required for most visitors. The reward is landscape and cultural depth that feel genuinely off the main circuit.

Best suited to: Travellers who enjoy long scenic drives, Buddhist heritage and high-altitude landscapes, and who accept flexibility in their plans.

Best time to visit

Seasons in Arunachal Pradesh

Oct-Nov (autumn)

Clear skies, stable weather and good mountain visibility. Often the most comfortable window for Tawang.

Dec-Feb (winter)

Cold with snow likely on Sela and around Tawang. Spectacular, but temporary road closures and very cold nights are possible.

Mar-Apr (spring)

Warming days, rhododendrons and orchids at various elevations. Conditions at Sela may still include snow in early March.

May-Sep (monsoon)

Heavy rain, landslides and road disruptions are common. We generally avoid scheduling long mountain routes in this period.

How many days?

Recommended duration

A Tawang circuit from the Assam side needs at least six days, and seven to eight nights is more comfortable. Journeys are driven in long stages, and a rest or local-exploration day at Dirang and Tawang makes a real difference to how the trip feels.

Longer itineraries of nine to ten nights allow side valleys such as Zemithang or a wildlife stop on the way in. Combining the western circuit with Ziro or eastern Arunachal usually needs a separate trip, because the road distances between regions are long.

Travel tips

Practical guidance

Reviewed 23 October 2026. Rules, permits and road conditions change; we confirm current requirements when planning your trip.

Transport and accessibility

Most journeys begin at Guwahati or Tezpur and continue by road to Bhalukpong. Guwahati to Tawang is a two-day road journey with realistic overnight halts. Flights into Arunachal are limited and weather-dependent.

Weather and clothing

Pack layers. Even in spring and autumn, nights at Tawang and Sela are cold. In winter, expect heavy insulation, thermal wear and waterproof outerwear.

Permits and entry

Indian visitors from outside the state need an Inner Line Permit, which can be applied for online. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit and usually travel with a registered operator. Rules change, so we confirm requirements at the time of booking.

Altitude and acclimatisation

Tawang sits at around 3,000 metres and Sela is about 4,100 metres. Gaining height gradually, drinking water and avoiding alcohol on arrival helps. Any symptoms should be taken seriously.

Road conditions

Landslides, roadworks and weather can slow journeys. Start early, avoid night driving and keep buffer days in the plan.

Family travel

Suitable for older children who can handle long drives and cold weather. For young children or older relatives, the altitude and long road days need careful thought.

Local customs

Dress respectfully at monasteries, walk clockwise around Buddhist structures, remove footwear where requested and ask before photographing people.

Responsible travel

Carry out your waste, support locally run homestays and guesthouses, and avoid trekking or photography in areas where restrictions apply.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for Arunachal Pradesh?

Yes, in most cases. Indian visitors from outside the state need an Inner Line Permit, and foreign visitors need a Protected Area Permit. See our permit guide.

How long does it take to reach Tawang?

From Guwahati, the road journey is generally split over two days, with an overnight halt at Bomdila or Dirang. Actual time depends on conditions and stops.

Is altitude a problem in Tawang?

Tawang is at about 3,000 metres. Most healthy travellers manage well with a gradual ascent, but it is sensible to plan acclimatisation and avoid pushing too hard on arrival.

Will Sela Pass be open?

Usually yes, but heavy snow or bad weather can cause temporary closures, mostly in winter. We build flexibility into plans and monitor conditions.

Can we visit Bum La or other border sites?

Border sites require separate permissions that are issued under specific conditions and may not be available. We do not promise access.

Is mobile connectivity reliable?

Not always. Coverage can be limited in remote stretches and at some lodgings, so share your itinerary with family in advance.

Is Arunachal good for families?

It can be, with older children and a relaxed plan. Long drives and cold temperatures are the main considerations.
