Maa Kamakhya Temple Travel Guide

Kamakhya Temple, on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, is one of India's most important Shakti shrines. A visit rewards preparation, especially around queues and timing.

About the temple

Kamakhya is a major pilgrimage site dedicated to the goddess Kamakhya, set on a hill above the Brahmaputra. The complex includes the main sanctum and several smaller shrines. Pilgrims and visitors come throughout the year.

Planning your visit

  • Allow time: Queues for darshan can be long, particularly on weekends, festival days and in peak pilgrim seasons. Depending on the day, the visit can take a few hours.
  • Go early: Mornings are usually calmer and cooler.
  • Check access options: Some temple arrangements may allow paid or priority entry. Rules change, so ask your guide or the temple office for current arrangements.

Festivals and closures

The annual Ambubachi festival, held around mid- to late June, draws very large crowds and involves temporary closure of the main sanctum for several days. We do not plan visits during this period. Dates follow the traditional calendar, so check each year.

What to wear and carry

  • Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees.
  • Footwear is removed before entering, so wear shoes that are easy to take off.
  • Rules about leather items, bags, mobile phones and photography inside the complex can apply. Check on arrival.
  • Carry cash for offerings and small purchases.

What visitors may see

Animal sacrifice is part of some traditions at the complex. Visitors, especially families, may wish to be aware of this in advance.

Combining with other sights

Kamakhya is easily paired with a Brahmaputra outing, Umananda Island or the Assam State Museum. See our guide to evening cruise planning.

Planning tip

We usually place Kamakhya on the morning of the first full day or the final afternoon of a journey. See Assam: Wildlife, Culture and the Brahmaputra or Assam and Kaziranga.
