Kaziranga Safari Planning Guide
Kaziranga is a place where careful planning pays off. Ranges, safari modes and timings all shape what you see, and several details are set by the park authority from season to season.
How safaris are organised
Kaziranga is divided into several ranges, and each is visited separately. Most visitors choose jeep safaris, which run in morning and afternoon slots. Elephant safaris have been offered in some seasons and ranges, but availability and arrangements change, so we confirm them at the time of booking rather than assume them.
Slot timings, ticket arrangements and entry procedures are set by the park authority. We do not quote fixed timings or fees on this page because they change.
The four main ranges
- Central (Kohora): The most popular range, with the main tourist complex. It offers open grassland and frequent rhino sightings in good conditions.
- Western (Bagori): Quieter and known for wetlands and birdlife.
- Eastern (Agoratoli): Close to the Brahmaputra and good for waterbirds in winter.
- Burapahar: A more remote, hillier section. Access can be limited, so confirm availability in advance.
A balanced plan includes at least two ranges, since each has a different landscape and mix of wildlife.
How many safaris to plan
For most guests, two to three safari slots across two ranges offers a good balance. A third slot is a sensible buffer, because sightings are never guaranteed. Our three-night Kaziranga itinerary is built around this approach.
What to wear and carry
- Muted colours such as olive, khaki and grey.
- A warm layer, scarf and cap for cool mornings in winter.
- Binoculars, if you have them. A naturalist's guidance helps with identification.
- A dust cover for cameras. Open jeeps are dusty.
- Photography rules vary, so follow the guidelines at each range.
Safari etiquette
Stay seated, keep noise low and follow your guide's instructions. Do not leave the vehicle except at designated points. Never feed or approach wildlife, and keep a respectful distance from rhinos and elephants.
Seasonal considerations
The park typically closes for the monsoon, roughly from May to October, and reopens for the cooler season. See our guide to the best time to visit Kaziranga for seasonal detail.
Planning tip
Book accommodation early for December to February, when demand is highest. To combine Kaziranga with a cultural itinerary, see Assam: Wildlife, Culture and the Brahmaputra or explore Assam and Kaziranga.
