Overview
This is the shortest realistic way to visit Tawang by road. It involves long driving days, and we recommend it only for travellers comfortable with that. If you can spare two extra nights, our seven-night journey is considerably more relaxed.
The final day is long, and many guests choose to depart from Tezpur or take a late-evening flight from Guwahati.
- Duration
- 5 Nights / 6 Days
- Route
- Guwahati > Bhalukpong > Dirang > Tawang > Dirang > Tezpur
- Suits
- Experienced road travellers with limited time, comfortable with long days and variable conditions.
- Stay style
- Simple, comfortable hotels and guesthouses along the route. Facilities are modest in this region, and heating matters more than frills in colder months.

Practical considerations
Permits
Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit, and foreign visitors a Protected Area Permit. We help with the process.
Altitude
Tawang is at about 3,000 metres. A compressed itinerary offers less acclimatisation, so we advise caution.
Road conditions
Landslides or snow can disrupt plans. We recommend adding a buffer day.
Season
Best from late October to April. Avoid the monsoon.
