Arunachal Pradesh Travel Permits

Most visitors to Arunachal Pradesh need a permit. The requirements differ for Indian and foreign nationals, and rules can change, so this page offers a general guide rather than a final word.

Indian nationals: Inner Line Permit

Indian visitors from outside Arunachal Pradesh need an Inner Line Permit (ILP). Applications are generally made through the state's online portal or at designated offices, such as the Residential Commissioner's offices in Guwahati and Tezpur. A fee applies.

Typical requirements include:

  • A valid government photo ID.
  • A recent photograph.
  • A local reference or a confirmed booking at a place you will stay. For Tawang, a confirmed hotel booking is often used to verify details.

The permit is normally valid for a limited number of days and can sometimes be extended. It is checked at entry points such as Bhalukpong and at other checkposts.

Foreign nationals: Protected Area Permit

Foreign visitors need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) in addition to an Indian visa. Travel is usually arranged as a group or through a registered tour operator, and the permit is valid for a limited number of days. Additional clearance may apply to nationals of certain countries.

Border-area sites

Sites near the border, including some high-altitude lakes and passes, may need separate permissions that are not always available. We do not promise access, and plans may change on the day.

Apply early

Online processing can be quick, but timings vary and portals sometimes face technical issues. We recommend applying well before travel and carrying printed copies of permits and ID.

Rules change

Fees, documents, validity and procedures are revised from time to time. Check the official state portal or ask us to confirm the latest requirements when you enquire.
