Arunachal Pradesh
Tawang Travel Guide
Tawang is a monastery town at roughly 3,000 metres, reached by one of India's most dramatic mountain roads. Allow time for the journey and for your body to adjust.
Getting there
Tawang is usually reached by road from Bhalukpong, via Tenga, Bomdila, Dirang and the Sela Pass. From Guwahati, this is a two-day journey with an overnight halt at Bomdila or Dirang. Plan for long driving days and keep a buffer for weather and landslides. See our guide to road journeys in Arunachal.
What to see
- Tawang Monastery: A large and historically important Buddhist monastery with a commanding hilltop setting. Allow a slow visit and observe monastery etiquette.
- Urgelling Monastery: Associated with the birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama, a short drive from town.
- Tawang War Memorial: A memorial to soldiers of the 1962 conflict.
- Nuranang Falls: A tall waterfall near Jang, on the road beyond Tawang.
- High-altitude lakes: PT Tso and Sangetsar Lake can be visited subject to permissions, weather and road conditions.
- Zemithang Valley: A remote valley northwest of Tawang, visited in some itineraries subject to permission and conditions.
Altitude and health
Tawang is at around 3,000 metres, and Sela Pass exceeds 4,000 metres. Ascend gradually, drink water, avoid alcohol on arrival and rest on your first day. Take symptoms like persistent headache, nausea or breathlessness seriously. See Ladakh acclimatisation guide for general principles.
Weather and packing
Pack thermal layers, a windproof jacket, gloves, a hat and sturdy footwear. Nights can be very cold even outside winter. Heating in guesthouses is basic, so ask about it in advance.
Practicalities
Mobile coverage is patchy in places. ATMs may not always work, so carry some cash. Facilities are simple, with good local food, including Monpa dishes and momos.
Planning tip
Allow at least three nights in Tawang if you can. See the Arunachal Mountain Journey or read about Arunachal permits.
