Arunachal Pradesh
Best Time to Visit Arunachal Pradesh
Arunachal's seasons vary dramatically with altitude. The right time for Tawang is not the right time for lower valleys, and the monsoon affects everything.
Autumn: October to November
Skies are often clear, rain has eased and mountain views open up. Roads are generally in better condition after the monsoon, though landslide repairs may linger in some stretches. This is often the most comfortable period for Tawang.
Winter: December to February
Cold, with snow likely at Sela Pass and around Tawang. The scenery can be stunning, but temporary road closures, very cold nights and limited facilities are possible. Winter suits experienced travellers with flexible plans. In winter, black-necked cranes may be seen in valleys such as Sangti or Zemithang, though sightings are not guaranteed.
Spring: March to April
Temperatures rise gradually. Rhododendrons and orchids bloom at different elevations, and the landscape turns greener. Early March can still bring snow at higher elevations, and showers become more common later in spring.
Monsoon: May to September
Heavy rain, landslides and road disruptions are common, particularly on the Tawang route. We generally avoid scheduling long mountain journeys during this period. Lower areas and some cultural festivals can still be visited with flexible plans.
Festivals
Monpa and other community festivals follow lunar and local calendars, so dates shift each year. If you wish to plan around a festival, tell us early and we will check current dates.
Choosing your window
- For clear views and comfortable roads: October to early November, or late March to April.
- For snow: December to February.
- For flowers: April and May at various elevations.
