Road Journeys in Arunachal

The Bhalukpong to Tawang road

The most travelled route climbs from the Assam plains at Bhalukpong through Tenga, Bomdila and Dirang, crosses the Sela Pass and continues to Tawang. It is scenic and slow. The Sela Tunnel, opened in 2024, has made the crossing less weather-dependent, but the road beyond can still be affected by snow or landslides.

Realistic timings

• Guwahati to Bhalukpong: around 5 to 6 hours.
• Bhalukpong to Dirang: around 5 to 6 hours.
• Dirang to Tawang: around 5 to 6 hours.

These are approximate, and actual times depend on traffic, roadworks and weather. We plan with buffers and avoid back-to-back long days where possible.

Road conditions

Roads in the mountains are frequently repaired by road-maintenance agencies, and stretches may be bumpy or one-way. Landslides are most likely during the monsoon and after heavy rain, while snow and ice can affect high sections in winter.

Daylight matters

Sunsets come early in the east, especially in winter, sometimes before 4:30 pm. We avoid night driving on mountain roads and begin long days early.

Checkposts and permits

Permits are checked at entry points and at some checkposts along the route. Keep ID and printed permits accessible. See our permit guide.

Comfort tips

• Take motion-sickness medication if you are prone to it.
• Carry water, snacks and layers.
• Keep a day of flexibility in your plan.
• Expect limited fuel stations and basic roadside food in remote sections.

Beyond the western circuit

Roads to central and eastern Arunachal, such as those to Ziro or Namdapha, involve different, longer journeys. These are best planned as separate trips. See planning remote Himalayan destinations.

Planning tip

Our seven-night journey is paced to keep daily drives manageable. For region-wide planning, see Arunachal Pradesh.
