North Sikkim Travel Planning
North Sikkim is remote, high and rewarding, but it needs more preparation than other parts of the state. Here is what to consider before you go.
What North Sikkim offers
The region around Lachen and Lachung has deep valleys, waterfalls, high villages and alpine landscapes. Yumthang Valley is known for its rhododendron blooms in spring, and Gurudongmar Lake, above 5,000 metres, is one of the highest lakes in the country. Facilities are simple compared with Gangtok.
Permits and conditions
Indian visitors need a Protected Area Permit for North Sikkim, usually with a minimum stay (commonly three nights) and a maximum, and Gurudongmar requires a minimum stay in the region. Foreign nationals face tighter rules and cannot visit certain areas. Permits can be affected by weather and road conditions, so check current rules (see Sikkim travel permits).
Altitude and health
Lachen and Lachung are at around 2,700 metres, but Gurudongmar is above 5,000. Acclimatise in Gangtok first, drink water, eat lightly and avoid alcohol. Early starts for Gurudongmar can be cold and tiring. If you have heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, speak to your doctor first. Children and older travellers may prefer Lachung and Yumthang over Gurudongmar.
Roads and timing
Roads can be narrow and affected by landslides, snow and construction. Journeys of five to six hours are normal between Gangtok and Lachen, and conditions can change quickly. Build in a spare day if you have a tight return schedule.
Best season
Spring and autumn are generally the most suitable, with winter snow closing some areas and the monsoon causing landslides. See best time to visit Sikkim.
What to pack
- Warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves and a hat.
- Sunglasses and sun protection.
- Any personal medication.
- A small torch and spare cash, since cards and phone networks are unreliable.
