Sikkim Travel Permits and Practical Information
Permit rules in Sikkim depend on your nationality and where you want to go. This guide summarises the usual position as of October 2026, but please check current rules before you travel.
Indian citizens
Indian citizens do not need a permit to enter Sikkim or to visit places such as Gangtok, Ravangla or Pelling. Carry a valid government photo ID.
A Protected Area Permit (PAP) is needed for certain restricted areas, including:
- Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, which is usually a single-day permit.
- Nathu La, which operates on set days and depends on weather and security conditions.
- North Sikkim, including Lachen, Lachung and Yumthang, usually for a minimum of three nights and up to five.
- Gurudongmar Lake, which requires a minimum stay in North Sikkim.
Foreign nationals
Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter Sikkim, usually applied for online or through Indian missions abroad, and a separate PAP for restricted zones, normally arranged through a registered travel agent. Nathu La and Gurudongmar are generally not open to foreign nationals. Reports suggest that on-arrival issue of the RAP at border check posts has been replaced by online clearance, so apply before you travel.
How permits are arranged
PAPs are issued through the Permit Cell in Gangtok, district tourism offices or registered travel agencies. You will need photo ID and passport-size photographs, and foreign nationals also need passport and visa copies. We handle permit paperwork for guests travelling with us, but we need your documents well in advance.
Practical points
- Rules and procedures can change, including the introduction of digital permits for some areas.
- Permits can be cancelled or restricted because of weather, landslides or security conditions.
- Carry printed copies and keep original ID accessible, because check posts are frequent.
- Some nationalities need additional clearance, so please tell us your passport country early.
