Best Time to Visit Sikkim

The right season in Sikkim depends on what you want to see. Spring brings flowers, autumn brings clear skies and winter brings snow and quiet.

Spring: March to May

Spring is popular for good reason. Rhododendrons bloom in the high valleys, notably around Yumthang in April and May, and daytime temperatures are pleasant in the lower towns. Cloud often builds by afternoon, so mountain views are best early in the day. North Sikkim can still be cold.

Monsoon: June to September

Rain is heavy, particularly in North and East Sikkim, and landslides are a real risk. Waterfalls and valleys are green, but views are often hidden by cloud. If you travel in these months, choose lower-altitude areas such as Gangtok, Ravangla or Pelling, allow generous buffer time and avoid tight connections.

Autumn: October to November

Many travellers find this the most settled period, with clearer skies and good views of Kanchenjunga on many mornings. Temperatures drop quickly at altitude. Conditions vary from year to year, so no season can be promised.

Winter: December to February

Gangtok, Ravangla and Pelling are cold but comfortable with warm clothing. Snow is likely above around 3,000 metres, and parts of North Sikkim and Nathu La may be difficult or closed. Days are short, but the skies can be clear.

Choosing by interest

  • Flowers and green valleys: April and May.
  • Mountain views: late October to November, plus some clear days in December to February.
  • North Sikkim: spring and autumn, with weather-related flexibility.
  • Quiet travel: the shoulder weeks at the edges of each season.
