Sikkim
How Many Days Are Needed for Sikkim?
The answer depends on how much of the state you want to see and how much altitude you can comfortably handle. Here is a practical way to decide.
Five days: Gangtok and East Sikkim
Five days (four nights) covers the capital, Rumtek Monastery and a day trip to Tsomgo Lake, with a day in hand. It is a good introduction and works well for families. See our Gangtok and East Sikkim itinerary.
Seven days: three regions
Seven days allows Gangtok, Ravangla or Temi, and Pelling. You move gradually west, with a few long drives and several short, enjoyable stops. Our Mountains, Monasteries and Valleys itinerary follows this pattern.
Nine days: adding North Sikkim
If you want Lachen, Lachung and Yumthang, nine days is a practical minimum. You need time to acclimatise in Gangtok, enough nights in the north to meet permit requirements and time for weather delays. Read about North Sikkim planning before deciding.
What slows a Sikkim trip
- Winding roads that turn short distances into long drives.
- Landslide and weather delays, especially in the monsoon.
- Permit formalities for restricted areas.
- The journey to and from Bagdogra, which takes most of a day at either end.
Combining Sikkim with Darjeeling
Darjeeling and Sikkim fit well in a single trip. A common pattern is three to four nights in Darjeeling, a transfer day to Gangtok and a further four to six nights in Sikkim. The transfer takes most of a day, so avoid squeezing it.
