Sikkim Family Holidays

Sikkim can be a great family destination if you choose the right places and pace. Here is how to plan one with children or older relatives.

Where families do best

Gangtok, Ravangla and Pelling suit most families. They are at moderate altitude, have good places to stay and offer short, easy activities such as monastery visits, tea garden walks and viewpoints. Rumtek Monastery, Temi Tea Garden and Ravangla's Buddha Park are easy to enjoy with children.

Be careful with altitude and long drives

Tsomgo Lake is at around 3,700 metres, and North Sikkim is higher still. Young children and older travellers may find these areas tiring or uncomfortable. If you do include Tsomgo, go slowly, keep warm and be ready to turn back. We would normally leave out Gurudongmar for families with small children.

Pace and driving

Roads are winding, and car sickness is common. Plan shorter days, break long drives with stops and avoid early starts where you can. A family stays better rested with fewer hotel changes.

Choosing stays

Look for places with good meals, warm rooms and space to relax. Homestays and small boutique stays often work well for families, and some offer connecting rooms. We confirm facilities before suggesting a place.

Practical tips

  • Carry children's regular medication, a basic first aid kit and snacks.
  • Check permit requirements for children, including photo ID where needed.
  • Pack layers, because temperatures change quickly during the day.
  • Build in a rest day in the middle of the trip.
