Meghalaya Family Holidays: Planning Tips

Meghalaya can work well for families, provided the plan is paced for children and the weather. This guide covers what suits different ages and where to take extra care.

Why families enjoy it

The state has a mix of easy and active experiences: viewpoints and waterfalls close to the road, cave walks, a sacred forest with guided trails, village visits and boat rides on a clear river. Distances are short and the climate is cooler than the plains for much of the year.

Easy experiences for younger children

  • Shillong town: Ward's Lake, the Don Bosco Museum and cafes make a gentle first day.
  • Elephant Falls and viewpoints: short walks from the road, suitable for most ages.
  • Mawphlang Sacred Forest: a guided forest walk is generally manageable for school-age children, with a guide explaining local traditions.
  • Dawki boat ride: a calm outing in suitable conditions, subject to water levels and operator schedules.
  • Mawsmai Cave: a short lit passage, though it can be narrow and wet, and may close in heavy rain.

What to be careful with

The Nongriat walk involves thousands of stone steps each way, which is too much for many young children and for anyone who cannot be carried comfortably. Riwai is shorter and a better alternative. Slippery trails, steep drops near some viewpoints and fast streams after rain call for close supervision. Check each day's conditions locally and do not push on if the weather turns.

Pacing the journey

Guwahati to Shillong takes around three to three and a half hours and Shillong to Sohra around one and a half to two. Children usually cope better with one main activity a day and generous rest. If you can, base yourselves in two places rather than changing hotels every night. Our 4-night highlights itinerary is a sensible starting point and can be adjusted for age and stamina.

Food, health and comfort

Local food is varied, and vegetarian options are generally available in larger towns, though choices can be limited in villages. Carry water, snacks, basic medication and motion-sickness remedies for the winding roads. Mobile coverage can be patchy, so agree a meeting point if the group splits up.

Best months for families

Late October to February is usually the most comfortable, with clearer days and safer trails. Monsoon travel with children needs more caution because of road delays and closures. See the best time to visit Meghalaya.
