Caves and Waterfalls in Meghalaya
Meghalaya's limestone plateau is full of caves and its heavy rain feeds waterfalls all over the hills. Here is a sensible guide to the better-known ones, and how to plan around the weather.
Waterfalls near Shillong and Sohra
- Elephant Falls: a tiered waterfall close to Shillong, reached by a short walk and steps. A good first stop.
- Nohkalikai Falls: a tall plunge fall near Sohra, seen from a viewpoint. In cloud you may see nothing at all, so clear mornings and post-monsoon weeks are better.
- Seven Sisters (Nohsngithiang) Falls: a broad, multi-streamed fall viewed from a roadside point, at its best during and just after the rains.
- Dainthlen and other roadside falls: smaller sites with local legends, often skipped but pleasant if time allows.
Waterfalls further afield
- Krang Suri Falls: near Jowai in the Jaintia Hills, known for its turquoise pool. Swimming rules vary and may change with water levels, so follow local instructions.
- Waterfalls around the root bridge trails: Nongriat has natural pools along the walk, which add to the experience in the drier months.
Caves
The state contains an extensive cave system, some of it among the longest in the subcontinent. Most visitors only enter the developed show caves, and the longer systems are for experienced cavers with proper equipment and guidance, which we do not recommend without a specialist operator.
- Mawsmai Cave: a short, lit passage near Sohra, suitable for most people. It can be narrow in places, and sections may close after heavy rain.
- Arwah Cave: known for its fossil features, reached by a short walk through the woods. Check whether it is open.
- Siju and Mawjymbuin caves: these are in other parts of the state and need a distinct plan, so please ask us before you add them.
Safety and conditions
Water levels rise very quickly after rain. Do not swim in unfamiliar pools, and follow the guidance of local guides. Wear shoes with good grip, because rock and steps are slippery. Entry rules, fees and opening hours change, and sites are sometimes closed for maintenance or weather.
When to visit
Waterfalls are strongest from the monsoon to the weeks following it, but views are less reliable and closures are more common. Clear mornings after the rains give a good balance. Our guide to the best time to visit Meghalaya goes into more detail.
Responsible visiting
Take litter back with you, stay on marked paths and avoid disturbing wildlife and bat roosts. Pay local entry fees where requested, since they often support village maintenance.
Planning tip
Cluster the Sohra falls and Mawsmai Cave on one day, and keep a spare half-day in case of cloud or closure. Our Waterfalls and Living Landscapes journey is arranged this way. See also what to know before visiting Sohra.
