How to Plan a Family Holiday in the Eastern Himalayas
The Eastern Himalayas are well suited to family travel when the plan matches the family. This guide covers how to choose a destination, pace the days and avoid common mistakes.
Choose a destination by age and comfort
Darjeeling and Kalimpong are a gentle start. Distances between sights are modest, and many experiences, such as a railway ride, a tea garden visit and a monastery, work for children and grandparents alike.
Sikkim suits families comfortable with longer drives. Gangtok and its surroundings are easier than North Sikkim, which involves high altitude and permits.
Meghalaya and Assam add waterfalls, caves, root bridges and wildlife, though root-bridge walks involve many steps.
Keep the pace realistic
Hill roads are slow and winding. A day that looks short on a map can take much longer. For families:
- Limit long drives to a few hours where possible.
- Keep at least one night in each place, preferably two.
- Avoid scheduling every hour of every day.
Think about altitude and health
Most family itineraries in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Gangtok stay below about 2,500 m, but some children and adults feel unwell with rapid altitude gain. Go up gradually, drink water, and seek medical advice before high-altitude areas. We do not recommend North Sikkim at high altitude for very young children.
Choose stays with the family in mind
Look for family or connecting rooms, safe outdoor space, reliable heating in cooler months, and food that children will eat. Ask about stairs if grandparents are travelling.
Plan a few shared highlights
Children usually remember a small number of experiences: a train ride, a morning with animals, a waterfall, or a game on a tea-garden lawn. Build days around one highlight rather than five.
Prepare for weather
Rain is common, especially in the monsoon, and temperatures can drop quickly. Pack layers, waterproofs and a spare set of clothes for children.
