Best Time to Visit Meghalaya

There is no single perfect month for Meghalaya. The right time depends on whether you want clear views, full waterfalls or comfortable walking, and how flexible you can be with the weather.

Why timing matters here

Meghalaya sits on the path of the monsoon, and the southern edge near Sohra receives very heavy rainfall. Conditions vary a great deal between Shillong, which is higher and cooler, and the lower southern plains around Dawki. Local weather can also change within a day, so treat every season below as a general pattern rather than a promise.

October to November: post-monsoon clarity

Skies are often clear after the rains, the hills are green and the waterfalls still carry good water. Days are pleasant and nights begin to cool. This is a popular window for first visits, and it suits both sightseeing and walking. Festival dates vary, so ask us if a particular event interests you.

December to February: cool and dry

Winter brings cold mornings in Shillong, and the days are usually bright. Waterfalls are thinner, but the visibility is among the best of the year, and river activities near Dawki can be at their most comfortable. Pack warm layers for early mornings and evenings. Fog can affect views at times.

March to May: warming up

Spring brings warmer days and the first pre-monsoon showers. Rhododendron and orchids may be in bloom at some elevations. Thunderstorms can be heavy in the afternoon, and trails may become slippery as the rain increases through May.

June to September: the monsoon

This is when the waterfalls are at their most powerful, and the landscape is lush. It is also when landslides, road delays, closed caves and cloud-covered viewpoints are most likely. Walks to the living root bridges are possible but take more care, as steps and river crossings can be dangerous after heavy rain. If you travel in these months, build in spare days, keep your schedule loose and accept that some plans may change.

Which month for which interest

  • Waterfalls at full strength: the monsoon and the weeks just after it, with the caveats above.
  • Clear views and photography: late October to February.
  • Walking to root bridges: the drier months are more comfortable and safer underfoot.
  • River activities near Dawki: generally better after the monsoon, subject to water levels and operators.
  • Fewer crowds: weekdays outside public holidays, whichever season you choose.

Planning tip

Whatever the month, we suggest leaving a buffer day around any plan that depends on a specific viewpoint or walk, and checking conditions locally on the day. Our 6-night waterfalls itinerary has room for this. For the wider picture, see the Meghalaya travel guide or the Meghalaya destination page.
