Meghalaya
How Many Days Do You Need for Meghalaya?
Meghalaya looks compact on a map, but its roads are slow and its best experiences involve walking. Here is how to match the number of days to what you want to see.
Why the map misleads
Distances in Meghalaya are modest, but hill roads are narrow and winding, and traffic around Shillong can be heavy. Guwahati to Shillong takes around three to three and a half hours, and Shillong to Sohra often takes around one and a half to two hours. A day that looks light on paper can feel full once you add stops and walks.
Four to five days: the introduction
Four nights and five days is enough to see Shillong, the Sohra area and one or two walks without rushing. A typical plan covers Shillong and Mawphlang, then Sohra with its waterfalls and caves, and keeps one day for Dawki or for a root bridge walk. It suits first-time visitors and shorter holidays. Our Meghalaya Highlights itinerary follows this pattern.
Six to seven days: waterfalls and walks
With six nights, you can stay at least one night in or near Sohra, make an early start on the Nongriat walk, and still reach Dawki and Mawlynnong without a long single day. This allows for weather delays too. The Waterfalls and Living Landscapes itinerary is built on this pace.
Seven to eight days: beyond the usual circuit
Adding the Jaintia Hills, quieter villages and a second base lets you leave the busiest viewpoints. You get more time for sacred forest walks, heritage sites such as the Nartiang monoliths and a slower relationship with the places you visit. See Meghalaya Beyond the Usual Circuit.
Combining with Assam
Many guests pair Meghalaya with Kaziranga or Guwahati. This works well, but adds travel time between the two states. Read our notes on the Assam and Meghalaya combined itinerary before deciding.
Things that change the answer
- Walking appetite: the root bridge walks each take half a day or more.
- Season: in the monsoon, allow at least one spare day.
- Travelling with children or older guests: shorter days and fewer steps are wise. See Meghalaya family holidays.
- Flight timings: early departures from Guwahati usually mean returning the evening before.
Planning tip
If in doubt, add a day rather than removing a stop. The state rewards slower travel, and a spare day is often what turns a good trip into a relaxed one. Visit the Meghalaya destination page for more, or send us your dates and we will suggest a length.
