Darjeeling
How Many Days Are Enough for Darjeeling?
The right length depends on how you like to travel. This guide explains what two, three, four and five or more nights allow, so you can decide with confidence.
Start with the travel time
The drive from Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station takes roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours each way. Counting arrival and departure, a stay of fewer than two nights leaves very little time in the town.
Two nights: a short taste
Two nights gives you a Tiger Hill morning, a visit to Ghoom and the Batasia Loop, and an evening in town. It works for a quick break but leaves little room for tea estates or slower exploration.
Three nights: the essentials
Three nights is a sensible minimum for first-time visitors. It allows a Tiger Hill morning, a tea estate and heritage sights, without constant movement. See the Darjeeling Essentials itinerary for an example.
Four nights: a slower pace
Four nights lets you add a heritage walk, a longer tea experience and some free time. This is the length many travellers find most comfortable, because there is room for mist, rest or a change of plan. The slower-pace itinerary shows the idea.
Five or more nights: Darjeeling and beyond
With five or six nights, you can combine Darjeeling with quieter places such as Kurseong or Mirik. Longer stays also suit travellers who want to read, write or photograph without rushing. Our Darjeeling and the Quiet Hills journey is one way to do it.
Factors that change the answer
- Weather: mist can cost you a view, so extra time helps.
- Children or older travellers: shorter days and more rest suggest a longer stay.
- Interests: tea, heritage and photography all reward slower pacing.
- Onward travel: if you are continuing to Sikkim or Kalimpong, you may prefer a shorter Darjeeling stay.
