Best Time to Visit Darjeeling
Darjeeling changes with the seasons. Here is how each period feels, what to expect from the weather and how to choose the right month for the kind of trip you want.
It depends on what you want
There is no single best month. Conditions vary from year to year, and mountain weather can change within hours. What follows is a general guide, not a guarantee.
Spring: March to May
Days are mild, rhododendrons bloom and the first-flush tea harvest begins. This is a popular time, with a good chance of clear mornings, especially in April and early May. Late spring can become busy, so book early.
Summer and monsoon: June to September
Heavy rain, mist and landslides are common. Mountain views are rare, and roads can be disrupted. On the other hand, the hills are lush, the crowds thin and the pace is quiet. This period suits flexible travellers who enjoy green landscapes and do not mind the weather.
Autumn: October to early December
Often considered the most reliable season for views, with crisp air and clear skies. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, while evenings are cool. It is also the busiest period around festivals, so stays should be booked well ahead.
Winter: late December to February
Cold, with frost likely and occasional light snow at higher points. Mornings can be sharply clear, and the town is calmer after the holiday rush. Bring warm layers, and check that your stay has heating or good bedding.
Choosing by interest
- Mountain views: October to early December, then April to May.
- Tea and first flush: March to May.
- Fewer crowds: monsoon or deep winter, with realistic expectations.
- Families: spring or autumn, when the weather is milder.
