Tea Experiences in Darjeeling
Darjeeling is known for its tea, but a good tea experience is more than a factory stop. Here is how to plan visits that feel informative and unhurried.
Understanding the seasons
Darjeeling tea is harvested in distinct periods, often called flushes. The first flush, usually from around March, is light and floral. The second flush, from roughly May to June, is fuller and more muscatel. Monsoon and autumn teas have their own character. Visiting at different times gives you different experiences, and not all estates are active year-round.
What a visit can include
- A walk through the tea garden, learning how the leaf is plucked.
- A look at the factory processes, such as withering, rolling and drying, when operating.
- A guided tasting, comparing different flushes.
- Time with a local planter, manager or guide to hear how the estate works.
Visiting arrangements vary
Estates set their own policies. Some welcome visitors regularly, while others limit access, charge a fee or close the factory at certain times. We confirm arrangements in advance, and we do not assume that every estate will be open on every day.
Where to go
Happy Valley is close to Darjeeling town. Other estates sit further away around Darjeeling and near Kurseong. A visit to a more distant estate usually takes half a day, including travel.
Buying tea
If you want to take tea home, buy from the estate or a reputable local seller. Ask about the flush, the garden and the date of harvest. Tea is best stored airtight, away from light, heat and strong odours.
Responsible choices
Estates employ many local families, so fair buying practices matter. Ask how workers are supported and favour direct purchases where possible.
Planning tip
A tea experience needs time, ideally a morning with a relaxed lunch afterwards. Our slower-pace Darjeeling journey builds in a full tea morning, and Darjeeling and the Quiet Hills adds Kurseong tea country. For wider context, see the Darjeeling destination page.
