Darjeeling
Darjeeling Travel Guide
A practical introduction to Darjeeling: how to reach it, what to see, how long to stay and how to plan a trip that feels unhurried rather than crowded.
What Darjeeling is like
Darjeeling is a hill town at roughly 2,000 metres, strung along a ridge in the Eastern Himalayas. Its character comes from tea estates, monasteries, colonial-era buildings and a mix of communities. The town is busy and steep, but the surrounding hills are calm and green.
Getting there
Most travellers arrive at Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri railway station near Siliguri. From there, the road to Darjeeling takes roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic, weather and route. A private car is the most comfortable option. Shared jeeps run too, but they are tighter and less flexible.
The main sights
- Tiger Hill for a sunrise view, if the weather cooperates.
- Ghoom Monastery and the Batasia Loop, usually visited together.
- Chowrasta, the Mall and Observatory Hill for a walk through the town's centre.
- Bhutia Busty Monastery and the Peace Pagoda for quieter spiritual spaces.
- A tea estate, such as Happy Valley, subject to visiting arrangements.
- The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a heritage line, with short rides subject to current schedules.
How long to stay
Three nights covers the essentials. Four or five nights allows heritage walks, tea experiences and slower days. Our guide to how many days to spend in Darjeeling goes into more detail.
When to go
Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to early December) are the usual favourites, with milder weather and better chances of mountain views. Winter is cold but often clear. The monsoon brings heavy rain and mist. Read the full best time to visit Darjeeling for more.
Practical advice
- Carry layers, even in spring.
- Wear shoes with grip, as lanes are steep and can be wet.
- Keep one flexible day in your plan in case mist hides the views.
- Ask before photographing people, monks or ritual spaces.
- Choose a stay carefully. Our notes on where to stay in Darjeeling explain the trade-offs.
