Spiti
Spiti Road Conditions and Seasonal Routes
Two roads lead into Spiti, and neither is predictable. Understanding how each behaves through the year is the key to a smooth journey.
The two approaches
From Shimla via Kinnaur: the road follows the Sutlej and Spiti rivers through Rampur, Kalpa and Nako before reaching Tabo and Kaza. It is the longer approach in distance, but generally open for more of the year. It passes through areas with steep cliffs and landslide risks.
From Manali via Kunzum La: this route goes through the Atal Tunnel, Sissu, Gramphu, Batal and Kunzum La (around 4,500 metres) to Losar and Kaza. It is shorter but typically opens only for part of the year, depending on snow clearance, and can be affected by water crossings and weather. Treat dates as indicative; we confirm them at the time of planning.
Seasonal logic
- Late spring: the Shimla side usually opens first, while the Manali side may still be closed.
- Summer to early autumn: both are generally usable, although rain and landslides can cause delays, particularly on the lower Kinnaur stretch during the monsoon.
- Late autumn to early spring: Kunzum La is typically closed, and the Shimla approach may be affected by snow or slides.
What road conditions are like
Expect narrow sections, hairpins, loose gravel, water crossings and occasional damage after rain. Distances are short on the map but slow in practice; some days involve eight hours or more of driving. Mobile coverage and fuel are limited; fuel is typically available at Kaza and a few other points but not guaranteed along the full route.
A loop is better than an out-and-back
Where both roads are open, a loop (up one, down the other) uses time well and avoids repeating scenery. It also helps with altitude, since the Shimla side climbs more gradually. If one road closes, we revert to an out-and-back plan.
Planning for delay
Build at least one buffer day into any itinerary and avoid fixed flights or trains on the day after your return. Road closures can last hours or days, and permits or conditions may change at short notice. Our Spiti Valley Road Journey includes sensible margins.
Safety on the road
- Travel in daylight, and avoid driving after heavy rain or snow.
- Use an experienced local driver familiar with the terrain.
- Do not cross flooded sections or unstable slopes against local advice.
- Carry water, snacks, warm layers and any essential medicines.
Before you travel
Check current road reports with local sources close to your departure date. We do this for every guest. Foreign nationals may need permits for some parts of the valley and the Kinnaur approach; please check the current rules.
