Leh to Nubra Valley: What to Expect

The journey from Leh to Nubra crosses one of the world's highest motorable passes and descends into a green valley of sand dunes and monasteries. Here is how to plan it.

The route in brief

The road from Leh climbs to Khardung La, then descends to the Shyok valley and into Nubra. Diskit, with its large monastery, and Hunder, with its sand dunes, are the usual bases. The drive is typically around five to six hours each way, depending on road conditions and stops, and the pass can be slowed by traffic, repairs or weather.

Altitude

Khardung La is commonly cited at about 5,300 metres. Nubra's valley floor is lower than Leh, roughly 3,000 metres, which is why many people find it a comfortable overnight stay after they have adjusted. Avoid lingering at the pass, since time at the top is best kept short. Our acclimatisation guide explains why you should spend two easy days in Leh first.

Permits

Nubra Valley requires a permit for Indian citizens (an Inner Line Permit or online registration with associated charges), and a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered agent for foreign nationals. Permits depend on route and category, can be cancelled for weather or security reasons and should be carried in print. We arrange permits for our guests and confirm the current process.

What to see

  • Diskit Monastery: perched above the valley, with a large Maitreya statue.
  • Hunder dunes: high-altitude sand dunes where Bactrian camels, subject to availability, offer short rides; a quiet walk is just as rewarding.
  • Panamik and the hot springs: a further drive, subject to road conditions.
  • Turtuk: a remote village near the border, reached by a long drive and only in some seasons or with permits; often kept for longer itineraries.

Suggested timings

A single night in Nubra works, but two nights make the experience calmer. One night allows a morning in Diskit and Hunder before returning, while a second night lets you add the countryside and an unhurried return. See our 6 Nights / 7 Days Ladakh journey, which includes Nubra after proper acclimatisation.

Seasons

The route is generally open in summer, but Khardung La can close temporarily because of snow, landslides or maintenance, especially at either end of the season. Winter travel is possible only when the road is open and is very cold. Check the best time to visit Ladakh.

Practical tips

  • Start early. Weather and traffic are better in the morning.
  • Carry water, snacks, layers, sun protection and a charger. Mobile coverage is limited.
  • Fuel and services are sparse outside the main towns.
  • Use an experienced local driver; the road has steep sections, and the Shyok stretch can be affected by water.
  • Plan your return day with spare time in case of a delay.
