Kalimpong

Kalimpong Travel Guide

Kalimpong is a calmer, greener alternative to its better-known neighbour. This guide covers what to see, how to get there and how to plan a stay that suits the town's rhythm.

A different kind of hill town

Kalimpong sits at roughly 1,250 metres and has long been a meeting point of Himalayan cultures. Its mission schools, monasteries, churches and plant nurseries give it a distinct character. The pace is slower than Darjeeling, and the town is well suited to unhurried exploration.

Getting there

From Bagdogra airport or New Jalpaiguri station, the drive takes roughly 3 hours, usually via the Teesta valley, depending on traffic and road work. It is also possible to continue from Darjeeling or Sikkim, with timings that vary by route and conditions.

What to see

  • Durpin Monastery on Durpin Dara, a hilltop monastery with broad views.
  • Thongsa Gompa, one of the older monasteries in town.
  • Deolo Hill, a viewpoint and park, good in the evening.
  • Plant nurseries, known for orchids and cacti, subject to opening times.
  • The local market, where you can try regional food and buy small crafts.

Day trips and extensions

Lava and Kolakham, roughly 1.5 hours from town, offer forest walks and wide views. Rishop and Lolegaon are further afield, with simple facilities. Read our guide to offbeat places around Darjeeling and Kalimpong for more.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Winter is cool and clear, and the monsoon is wet with a risk of landslides on narrow roads.

How many days

Two nights suit a brief visit. Three or four nights allow a day trip and a slower pace. Our Kalimpong and the Mountain Valleys itinerary shows one way to spend four days.
