Offbeat North Bengal

Offbeat Places Around Darjeeling and Kalimpong

Beyond the best-known viewpoints lie quieter villages, forests and ridges. This guide introduces several lesser-known areas and explains how to approach them realistically.

What offbeat means here

Offbeat does not mean difficult. It means fewer crowds, simpler facilities and a slower pace. Roads tend to be narrower, and distances take longer than they appear on a map.

Around Darjeeling

  • Kurseong and Dow Hill: tea gardens, forest walks and a calm town at the foot of the higher hills.
  • Mirik: a lakeside hill town with tea slopes and views, a few hours from Darjeeling by hill road.
  • Takdah and Mongpu: quiet settlements with colonial-era associations and cinchona plantations. Access and facilities vary, so confirm before planning.

Around Kalimpong

  • Lava and Kolakham: forest villages with trails, waterfalls and a cooler climate, roughly 1.5 hours from Kalimpong by road.
  • Rishop and Lolegaon: remote viewpoint villages known for sunrise and tranquillity. Facilities are simple, and road conditions can change.
  • Neora Valley National Park: a protected forest area near Lava. Entry rules vary, so check current arrangements.

The Dooars

Lower down, the Dooars offer forests, rivers and wildlife in places such as Gorumara and Jaldapara. Safaris follow forest department schedules and seasonal closures. The Dooars suit travellers who would like a change from the hills.

How to plan

  • Limit the number of bases. Each move costs a half-day.
  • Choose a few places, and stay longer.
  • Expect simpler rooms and fewer dining choices.
  • Keep a flexible day for weather or road delays.
