Best Time to Visit the Andaman Islands

The Andamans are a tropical island group, so the question is less 'hot or cold' and more 'calm sea or rough sea'. Here is how the seasons generally shape a holiday.

The short answer

For most beach and water-based holidays, the drier months from roughly November to April are the most dependable. Seas are generally calmer, visibility for snorkelling and diving is usually better, and ferries tend to run more predictably. That said, conditions vary from year to year, and no month guarantees perfect weather.

These are usually the most comfortable months, with warm days, lower humidity and generally gentle seas. They are also the busiest, particularly around Christmas and New Year, so ferries and well-placed accommodation fill early. If your dates fall in this window, plan and confirm well ahead.

March to May: hot, still and clear

Temperatures and humidity rise, but the sea is often very calm and underwater visibility can be good. Mornings and late afternoons are pleasant for beaches; the middle of the day is better spent in the shade or the water. Occasional pre-monsoon squalls are possible late in the season.

June to September: the southwest monsoon

Expect heavy rain, a rougher sea and a greater chance that ferries, boat trips and water activities are delayed or cancelled at short notice. The islands are green and quiet, and some travellers enjoy the lower crowds, but this is a poor choice if snorkelling, diving or a tight ferry schedule is central to your plans. If you do travel then, build in spare days and keep plans flexible.

October and November: the shoulder period

The monsoon usually withdraws in October, but the northeast monsoon and cyclonic disturbances in the Bay of Bengal can bring unsettled spells through October and into November. Mornings may be clear with afternoon showers. It can be a good compromise if you can accept some weather risk.

Weather risk in any season

Cyclonic systems can form in the Bay of Bengal, mostly in the pre-monsoon (April to May) and post-monsoon (October to December) windows. Authorities may suspend ferries and water activities when conditions require it. Travel insurance that covers disruption is sensible for island trips.

Choosing by interest

  • Snorkelling and diving: usually the calmer, clearer months; ask about the specific site and conditions on the day.
  • Beach relaxation: November to April is generally the safest window.
  • Photography and quiet: the monsoon can be dramatic, with the trade-offs above.
  • Families with young children: calm-sea months reduce the stress of ferry crossings.

Planning tip

Whichever season you choose, we recommend leaving a buffer day before any international or long-haul departure from Port Blair.
