Nepal Combined with Darjeeling or Sikkim

Why combine them

The Eastern Himalayas and Nepal share mountain scenery, but offer different experiences. Darjeeling and Sikkim bring tea country, monasteries and ridge-top views, while Nepal adds the Kathmandu Valley's heritage and, further west, Pokhara or Chitwan. A single trip can feel like two distinct holidays.

Routes between Siliguri and Nepal

There are two broad options.

• By road: From Siliguri, the border crossing at Panitanki-Kakarbhitta leads into eastern Nepal. From there, onward travel to Kathmandu or Pokhara is a long journey, so we usually pair a road entry with domestic flights.
• By air: Flights connect Kathmandu with Indian cities, and there are flights between Bagdogra and Kathmandu on some schedules. Flight availability and timings can change, so we check current options at the time of planning.

Because routes and schedules can shift, we avoid rigid assumptions and design with some flexibility.

Sample combinations

• Darjeeling and Kathmandu: Four nights in Darjeeling, then fly or travel to Kathmandu for three or four nights.
• Sikkim and Nepal: Gangtok and Pelling, followed by Nepal for heritage and lakes.
• Longer loop: Darjeeling, Sikkim and then Kathmandu and Pokhara, spaced over ten days or more.

Documents and logistics

Indian citizens can enter Nepal without a visa but need accepted ID. Other nationalities need a visa. Sikkim requires permits for certain areas, and Darjeeling does not. Check our Nepal documentation guide and the Sikkim permits guide when you plan a combined trip.

Planning tip

Avoid squeezing too much into a short trip. Border crossings, flights and long drives all take time, and a rushed route can reduce enjoyment. Tell us your dates and interests, and we will propose a sequence that keeps transfers realistic.
