How Many Days Do You Need for Bhutan?
Bhutan's distances look short, but winding roads make time on the road significant. Here is how different trip lengths work in practice.
Why the road matters
Bhutan's main valleys are only a few hours apart, but the roads climb and twist. Paro to Thimphu takes around an hour and a half, Thimphu to Punakha about three hours including Dochula Pass, and Punakha to Phobjikha another three hours. Delays from roadworks or weather are possible. Your trip length determines how much of the route you can enjoy rather than endure.
Four to five nights
Four nights suit a compact introduction: two in Paro, including the Taktsang walk, and two in Thimphu. This is a good option if you are adding Bhutan to a trip from Bagdogra or if time is limited. See the four-night Bhutan itinerary.
Six to seven nights
Six nights allow a fuller circuit, adding Punakha and, if you wish, Phobjikha. Punakha adds a river valley and a historic dzong, while Phobjikha is quieter and rural. This is a popular length for first visits. See the seven-day Bhutan itinerary.
Eight to nine nights
Eight or nine nights suit travellers who prefer a measured pace, with two nights in each main valley and time for village walks, crafts and long meals. See the slower nine-day itinerary.
Ten nights or more
Longer stays can extend into central Bhutan, such as Bumthang, which involves further travel, and often domestic flights or very long drives. Because these routes need careful planning, we design them case by case.
Factors that change the answer
- Entry route: Road entry via Phuentsholing adds most of a day at each end.
- Fitness and age: Taktsang and other walks may need an extra rest day.
- Season: Winter and monsoon conditions can slow travel.
- Festivals: Dates may require specific stops.
- Daily fees: Fees are charged per night, so length affects budget. Check Bhutan travel planning for the current structure.
Planning tip
If in doubt, choose a slightly longer stay with fewer changes of hotel. Our Bhutan page shows more detail on each valley.
