Best Time to Visit Bhutan
Bhutan's weather and festival calendar shape each season differently. Here is how the year tends to unfold in the western valleys.
Spring: March to May
Spring brings warming days, flowering rhododendrons and festivals such as the Paro tshechu, which usually falls in this period. Valleys are green, and skies are often clear in the mornings. It is a popular time, so book flights and hotels early.
Summer and monsoon: June to August
Rainfall increases, with clouds often covering the mountains. The valleys are lush and visitor numbers are lower, but road disruption from landslides is possible, and Taktsang's trail can be slippery. This season suits travellers who prioritise culture and quiet over mountain views.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is typically clear and settled, with good visibility and further festivals. It is another busy season. By late autumn, black-necked cranes begin to arrive in Phobjikha, though the timing varies each year.
Winter: December to February
Winter nights are cold, especially at higher elevations, but days are often sunny and dry. Some high passes may see snow. Crowds are thin, and Phobjikha is well known for its wintering cranes. Pack warm layers, and expect cold hotel rooms in older properties.
Festivals
Tshechus are annual religious festivals with masked dances, and their dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar, so they shift each year. Attending one can enrich a trip, but accommodation and flights fill early, and towns become crowded. If a festival is important to you, tell us when you enquire so we can check the dates.
