Best Time to Visit Spiti Valley

Spiti's accessibility changes with the season more than most destinations. Your dates decide which route is open, how cold it is and what you will see.

The main season

Roughly June to October is when most travellers visit, as both main road approaches are usually open and daytime temperatures are manageable. Nights are cold even in summer, and weather can change quickly. Dates for road openings vary every year.

Month by month

  • April to May: the Shimla-Kinnaur side may be open, but snow can remain at higher points, and some services have not yet reopened. The Manali side via Kunzum La is typically still closed. Conditions vary a lot.
  • June: both routes generally become available as snow clears. Villages come alive, and the valley is dry and bright.
  • July to August: the monsoon in the lower Himalayas can trigger landslides and road blockages on approach roads, especially on the Shimla-Kinnaur side, while Spiti itself lies in a rain shadow and is mostly dry. Build in extra time.
  • September: stable weather and clear skies make this a favourite month for many; barley harvests and autumn colour appear in villages.
  • October: colder, with a possible early closure of the Manali route. Fewer visitors and some seasonal closures of guesthouses.
  • November to March: deep winter, with heavy snow, very low temperatures and limited facilities. Winter travel is for experienced, well-supported journeys, and road access may be uncertain. Wildlife such as snow leopards is a draw for specialised trips, with no guarantees.

Which route is open when?

The Manali approach, via Atal Tunnel, Kunzum La and Losar, usually operates for only part of the year, roughly from early summer to autumn. The route from Shimla through Kinnaur to Kaza is generally the more reliable option and can be open for a longer period, but landslides and snow can still interrupt it. See Spiti road conditions and seasonal routes for more.

Altitude and weather

Kaza is at about 3,800 metres, and villages such as Langza, Hikkim and Komic are higher. Plan acclimatisation days, as described in our high-altitude preparation guide.

Choosing by interest

  • Villages, monasteries and landscapes: June to September.
  • Photography and autumn light: September to early October.
  • Fewer people: late May or October, with more risk of closures.
  • Winter wildlife and snowscapes: specialist journeys only.

What we do

We choose the route according to your dates and reverse or change direction if conditions require. We do not publish routes that are impractical for the dates you select. Our Spiti Introduction and Road Journey are designed for the open season.
