Kathmandu Heritage and Culture

Kathmandu's heritage is lived rather than preserved. Here is how to approach its major sites, from the old royal square to the great stupas.

The old royal squares

Kathmandu Durbar Square surrounds the former royal palace of Hanuman Dhoka. Temples, courtyards and carved wooden windows show the Newar craftsmanship that defines the valley. A guide adds depth, since many buildings are tied to local deities and rituals.

Patan (Lalitpur) is known for its metalwork and temple courtyards, while Bhaktapur, around 13 km east, is quieter and more medieval in feel. Many visitors give each of these a separate half-day.

Stupas and living religion

Swayambhunath sits on a hill west of the city, with wide views and a mix of Buddhist and Hindu shrines. Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, is surrounded by monasteries, shops and cafes. Early morning and dusk are particularly atmospheric, as pilgrims walk clockwise around the stupa.

Pashupatinath is a major Hindu temple complex on the Bagmati river. Entry to the main temple is for Hindus only. Other visitors can view the complex and the river ghats from the opposite bank. Respect ceremonies, and ask before taking photographs.

Local etiquette

  • Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered.
  • Remove shoes where requested and avoid pointing feet at shrines.
  • Walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels.
  • Leather items may be restricted at some temples.

Time and pacing

Three nights lets you see the main sites at a relaxed pace. A typical flow might be Patan on arrival, the royal square and Swayambhunath on day two, then Bhaktapur, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath on day three. Streets are busy and uneven, so comfortable shoes and breaks matter.

Festivals and closures

Festival dates follow lunar calendars and can change access and traffic. Some sites have specific visiting hours. We confirm these closer to your dates. Earthquake restoration work may also affect some monuments.

Planning tip

Our three-night Kathmandu cultural escape follows this rhythm, and the Nepal destination page shows how to extend the trip with Pokhara or Chitwan. If you are curious about walking-led exploration elsewhere, see our heritage walks.
