Overview
This itinerary stays in Leh for all four nights, so you do not change hotels while adjusting to altitude. You see the main monasteries of the Indus Valley and the quieter, lower Sham Valley without crossing a high pass.
It can run in more months than itineraries that include Nubra or Pangong, though winter conditions are very cold. It suits people who want to try Ladakh before committing to a longer, higher journey.

- Leh > Indus Valley > Sham Valley > Leh

Day 1Arrive in Leh and rest
Fly into Leh and transfer to your hotel. Rest, drink water and keep activity light. A short evening stroll is enough.
Day 2Gentle Leh day
A slow morning, then Leh Palace and the old town, and Shanti Stupa at sunset. Remain at an easy pace for acclimatisation.
Day 3Indus Valley monasteries
Visit Shey, Thiksey and Hemis, with an optional stop at Stok. Distances are modest, but monasteries involve steps. Return to Leh in the afternoon.
Day 4Sham Valley day
Drive west to Alchi, Likir and Basgo, stopping at the Magnetic Hill and the Indus-Zanskar confluence near Nimmu. This is a longer, lower-altitude day. An optional shorter alternative is a half-day Khardung La excursion if you feel well.
Day 5Departure
Transfer to Leh airport. Morning flights are the norm, so there is no sightseeing planned.
Main experiences
- Leh Palace and old bazaar
- Thiksey, Shey and Hemis monasteries
- Alchi monastery and Likir
- Indus-Zanskar confluence
- Guided time with local hosts
Practical considerations
Altitude
Leh is around 3,500 metres. The first two nights are light on purpose. Brief stops at Khardung La and Chang La (around 5,300 metres) are kept short. Speak to your doctor beforehand.
Permits
Leh town needs none. Nubra and Pangong need permits, which we arrange. Rules and fees change, so check current requirements.
Season
Suited to roughly June to mid-September. Road and pass conditions can change at short notice.
Road conditions
Mountain roads can be affected by landslides or weather. Drive times are long, and we keep days flexible.
This is a sample itinerary, not a fixed departure. Sequence, stays and activities are confirmed when we plan your journey, subject to availability, season, permits and local conditions.
